Cheryl’s Good Advice

Tell us about yourself in 1 line

I document my life in songs.

Tell us something that most people might not know about you.

I’ve had the habit of writing personal journals from a very young age. I’m on my 8th diary now. Writing gets me in the flow, and takes me to a happy place where I feel that my experiences and emotions can be encapsulated in their rawest forms. My newfound love for songwriting is most definitely an extension of that.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising up every time we fall.

Tell us about a time when this piece of advice came in useful.

I’ve lost count on the number of times this advice had saved me! For instance, last summer, I taught music to a group of children at a village in Yunnan. There was one lesson when I had to lead the children in vocal warmups. Because some of these warmups were a tad challenging, I embarrassingly messed up, thus leaving them confused. I felt inadequate and started questioning if I can be of any value to these kids at all. But I thought of this advice above, and figured out that most people wouldn’t remember you for the wrongs that you have committed. Instead, it’s how you bounce back from these faults that matter. So I went back, prepared religiously for my next few lessons, and was happy that the children enjoyed the subsequent lessons.
