Mindy is an explorer- no, an actxplorer who is currently travelling through Southeast Asia. What is Actxplorer? Actxplorer is a travel platform that collaborates with social enterprises, local communities and non governmental organizations in Asia to bring locals and travelers together in creating a positive social impact on local communities (www.actxplorer.com).
“My work at Actxplorer allows me to gain in depth insights into the culture, geopolitics, and real social issues that are lived out and experienced by people.”
Many may think that Mindy’s job scope is one full of leisure, and may even make the mistake of saying that it’s an easy one. However, while she’s travelling, she takes on the responsibility of connecting travellers and students to the company’s partners on the ground, helping those who follow her learn while she continues to build on her own knowledge of the world. Back in Singapore, she handles the company’s administrative and planning work.
What inspires you?
M: Seeing local social enterprises and organisations supporting their own communities, and how collaborative action across different stakeholders can help effect change on the ground.
Seeing the fruits of her labour simply drives her to work harder to raise awareness of the work Actxplorer does, and create more opportunities to garner support and manpower to fuel change.
What does doing good mean to you?
M: It means loving my neighbour as myself. What I desire for myself – a good education, a safe home, access to different types of opportunities, having a dignified work, and freedom to pursue my passions, I would hope the same for others, and where possible, walk alongside them to reach these.
Mindy wants to help achieve others what she hopes to have in life, and it is such a loving and kind personal belief to hold. She is a true example of the common quote “Love your neighbour as you love yourself”, and we can’t help but feel warm and fuzzy to witness it.
“We hope to see people developing deeper appreciation for the diversity of cultures in our region.”
She hopes that more people will feel compelled to use their skill and talents to help neighbouring countries in solving difficult social issues or crises, because that would also contribute to building sustainable partnerships between our partners around Southeast Asia. When asked how she would encourage other youths to be an everyday hero like herself, Mindy is quick to humbly deny that she is a hero, and that she is simply blessed with an opportunity.
“Young people should find out what they are passionate about, dive deep into it.”
“Seek out like-minded people that are willing to try out new things or projects together. Talk to older, more experienced people to see the fuller picture – it’s always good to inject some realism into our idealism!” Mindy adds. With a fiery attitude, she encourages us to stop being self conscious and worry less about what others may think!
