Many of us are familiar with the feeling of being exhausted — our alarm rings and we just can’t seem to find the willpower to leave our bed. 1. Water, the best energising drink

With the wide variety of wonderful fruit smoothies and bubble teas available, it’s easy to forget that plain water is man’s best friend.

Staying hydrated is often one of the easiest and healthiest ways to keep awake. The average adult should aim to drink at least two litres of water a day, preferably even more in sunny, humid Singapore!

If the plain taste of warm water isn’t your thing, you could try incorporating more fruit into your diet since it has high water content. Simply put cut-up fruit, such as oranges and grapefruit, into pitchers of water and leave it in the fridge for a cooling and refreshing mid-day drink!

Alternatively, you could also try eating more watermelon — the popular fruit is about 92% water, making it a sweet yet hydrating snack.

2. Splash of cold

Sometimes, we just want a lightning-quick way to wake up our mind and body, especially early in the morning, when we’re groggy after emerging from the burrow of our bed.

As some of us are accustomed to taking morning showers, it might help to end off your daily showers with a dose of ice water. The change in temperature will be a jolt to your senses and provide the wake-up call you need!

If you’re out and about, such as in the office or in school, you could also try wetting a cloth and placing it on your face. It gives the same effect and is much more convenient than taking a shower.

3. Rest and recharge

You’ve probably heard this before but our lack of energy mostly stems from lack of sleep or bad sleeping habits. Even if you’re busy to the point that you can only get six or seven hours of sleep, it’s important to try and make sure that the sleep you do get is quality sleep.

Put away all phones, laptops and other devices for at least half an hour before sleeping. The blue light emitting from these devices may cause you to stay awake longer than absolutely necessary. Instead, try reading a book before going to bed — not only will this allow your brain to relax, reading will also take your mind off the stress of everyday life!

4. Be grateful

Lack of energy can also be mental and emotional, rather than merely physical.

If we’re facing stress at work or in school, it can often sap us of all energy, leaving us feeling lifeless or unable to face the day. A good way to combat these bad days would be to show some gratitude! Go for a walk outside, away from the stresses of your day-to-day life and spend some time thinking about what you’re thankful for.

Sometimes, making a list of things that you are grateful for can also help, serving as a timely reminder of all the different elements in your life, be it big or small, that you can feel happy about!
Implementing an attitude of positivity and gratitude can serve as an instant energy booster!

5. Acts of Kindness

This might seem counterintuitive — “How does helping others help me feel more energised??”

Engaging in an act of kindness often involves noticing when others need help, and thinking of ways in which you can best assist them. This focused and immediate goal momentarily takes your mind off whatever you had previously been stressing about.

Furthermore, being kind to others is not simply a one-way street — it can allow you to feel good about yourself as well, knowing that you have been able to make the world a tiny bit warmer and better.
